Manipal Academy of Higher Education is a deemed university and Institution of Eminence headquartered at Manipal, about an hour north of Mangaluru, with a further campus in Mangaluru itself. It is known for medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied health, pharmacy and engineering.
NITTE (Deemed to be University) is a health sciences-led deemed university based at Deralakatte on the southern outskirts of Mangaluru. It is known for medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy and allied health, with engineering and management on associated campuses.
Srinivas University is a private university in Mangaluru with a main campus at Mukka, on the coast north of the city, and a city campus at Pandeshwar. It offers engineering, management, commerce, computer applications, allied health, hotel management and social sciences programmes.
Mangalore University is the state university for the coastal districts of Karnataka, with its Mangalagangothri campus at Konaje, south-east of Mangaluru. It runs postgraduate departments on campus and affiliates a large number of colleges across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu.
St Aloysius is a Jesuit institution in the centre of Mangaluru, founded as a college in 1880 and granted deemed university status in 2024. It is known for arts, science, commerce, management, computer applications and social work.
Srinivas Institute of Technology is an engineering college at Valachil, on the eastern edge of Mangaluru, affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University. It offers B.E. programmes in computer science, electronics, mechanical, civil and related branches, along with MBA and MCA.

Mangaluru is a coastal city with a compact cluster of health sciences and engineering institutions, a calmer pace than Bengaluru, and a culture familiar to Kerala families. For students from Kasaragod, Kannur and Kozhikode it is often the closest option outside the state. The Manipal campus of MAHE is about an hour north of the city.

Mangaluru is on the Konkan coastal line. Trains from Kannur take about three hours, from Kozhikode four to five, and from Ernakulam roughly eight to ten. Mangaluru International Airport also has short flights from Kochi.
