SRM Institute of Science and Technology is one of the largest deemed universities in India, with its main campus at Kattankulathur on the southern edge of Chennai. It is known for engineering and technology, and also offers management, science, humanities, law and health sciences.
VIT Chennai is the Chennai campus of the Vellore Institute of Technology, opened in 2010 on the Vandalur–Kelambakkam Road in the south of the city. It is known for engineering, particularly computer science, and also offers management, commerce, law and computer applications.
Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology is a deemed university on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) in south Chennai, established in 1987. It is known for engineering and technology and also offers science, management, law, architecture, pharmacy and allied health programmes.
Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) is a deemed university in west Chennai with campuses at Thandalam and Poonamallee. It is known for health sciences, including dental, medical, nursing, physiotherapy and allied health, alongside engineering, management and law.
Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science is a deemed university at Padur on the Old Mahabalipuram Road, south of Chennai. It is known for engineering, aeronautical and automobile engineering, architecture and management.
SSN College of Engineering is an autonomous engineering college at Kalavakkam on the OMR south of Chennai, affiliated to Anna University. It has a strong reputation for engineering education and research in Tamil Nadu.
Loyola College is a Jesuit autonomous college in Nungambakkam, central Chennai, founded in 1925 and affiliated to the University of Madras. It is known for arts, science, commerce and social sciences and is one of the most respected colleges in the city.
Madras Christian College is one of the oldest colleges in India, founded in 1837 and located on a wooded 365-acre campus at Tambaram in south Chennai. It is an autonomous college affiliated to the University of Madras, known for arts, science, commerce and management.
VISTAS is a deemed university at Pallavaram in south Chennai, near the airport, which grew out of Vels College of Pharmacy founded in 1992. It offers pharmacy, allied health, engineering, management, commerce, computer applications, law, hotel management and media programmes.
Amrita Chennai is the Chennai campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the multi-campus deemed university headquartered in Coimbatore. The campus at Vengal in the north-west of the city offers engineering, computer science and management programmes.
Anna University is the state technical university of Tamil Nadu, based at Guindy in Chennai. Its own campuses, including the College of Engineering Guindy and the Madras Institute of Technology, are among the most respected public engineering institutions in South India.

Chennai offers depth in engineering and technology, with several large deemed universities that run their own entrance tests and admission cycles, alongside historic autonomous colleges known for arts, science and commerce. The city has a strong manufacturing, automotive and IT base, and a long-established Malayali community. Trains from Kerala are direct and frequent.

Direct trains run from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode with journey times of roughly 12–16 hours. Flights from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram take about an hour and a quarter.
